    Martini Racing Makes Formula One Return With Williams

    It was only a year ago that Martini Racing, the official racing brand of Italian distillery Martini & Rossi, the maker of some very fine vermouth, made its return to international motorsport, teaming up with long-time partner Porsche to run its famous blue and red livery on a car raced by Sébastien Loeb in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. Martini is now making its return to the world of Formula One, by partnering with Williams, which has been rebranded Williams Martini Racing.

    At a special event held in London overnight, Williams’ FW36 2014 F1 car was rolled out wearing the Martini livery. The two have signed a multi-year contract, with drivers Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas also onboard for the next couple of years.


    The Martini brand’s longstanding relationship with motorsport and rich history of both sponsorship and participation in worldwide sporting events began in 1968, although the Martini name had already appeared on some cars before then.

    In 1972, Martini made its first foray into F1 by partnering with the team Tecno for a one-year deal. It then returned in 1975 as a partner of the successful Brabham team, a partnership that continued for three years. From 2006 to 2008, Martini was an official partner of Scuderia Ferrari but only had a minor presence.

    Now it’s time for a new chapter in the history of motorsport to be written, with Martini in partnership with Williams. We’ll see the Martini colors fly for the first time this season at the 2014 Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, which gets underway in just over a week.

    “2014 is going to be a fascinating season, with regulation changes of this scale often shaking up the grid and creating opportunities for teams to make a good step forward,” Williams founder and team principal Sir Frank Williams said in a statement. “In Martini we have a brand that shares a passion for motor racing and winning championships--this partnership is a milestone in our history and we look forward to working closely with Martini over the coming years.”

    Jeep isn’t just an American brand. It’s a global icon. And suitably, near the one of the headquarters of the United Nations, the Jeep Renegade is making its world debut.

    The 2015 Jeep Renegade, which will reach dealerships in the U.S. the third quarter of this year—and Europe this summer—is being shown here at the 2014 Geneva Auto Show. It follows the new Cherokee in presenting a Jeep that will play as well in Turin as it will in the brand’s Toledo (Ohio) home.

    The Renegade, which will be built in Melfi, Italy, for the world market, is cute yet ruggedly handsome; and carlike but tough enough to live up to the brand’s rugged reputation.

    Interior design chief Klaus Busse notes that the Renegade was designed by young people, for young people who do extreme sports or backpacking. The color palette will mix those influences on the outside, with what this set, along with most shoppers for an affordable vehicle such as this want: a more refined, subtle look inside.

    Jeep is truly going global. And that means American-size vehicle and American-size thirst won’t quite work. At less than 167 inches long, the 2015 Jeep Renegade fits just below the Compass and/or Patriot in the U.S. market.

    Developed with Fiat, but not a 'badge job'

    The Renegade’s underpinnings aren’t completely new, but it’s far from a badge job. It’s built on a new small-wide architecture that’s an evolution of what underpins the Fiat 500L—and will be shared, mostly, by the upcoming Fiat 500X. The Renegade and 500L might still be related, but in order to engineer in the packaging, the design, and the toughness and 4WD that Jeep wanted, the Renegade got different front frame rails, a revised rear suspension, a new fuel tank, and all sorts of other body improvements. There’s a completely different driving position here than in the 500L as well—with the steering wheel moved to accommodate it.

    The lineup of powertrains in the Renegade will truly be global as well. While international versions will get a wider range of gasoline engines, most with stop-start, we’ll get a base 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo, making 160 hp and 184 lb-ft. It will be offered with a base six-speed manual gearbox and a choice between front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive. The step-up engine for America will be a 2.4-liter Tigershark in-line four, making 184 hp and 177 pound-feet of torque.

    European versions of the Renegade will also offer a 1.6-liter ‘E.torQ’ engine that’s fitted with stop-start and a five-speed manual tuned for fuel-efficiency. Europe, as well will be able to specify two different MultiJet II turbo-diesel engines—a 1.6-liter and a 2.0-liter—with the latter engine making up to 258 pound-feet of torque.     Maserati Alfieri concept, 2014 Geneva Motor Show

    Maserati’s upcoming SUV, the Levante, will enter production in 2015 at the Mirafiori plant located in Turin, Italy, which is owned by Maserati’s parent company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and has the capacity to build up to 300,000 cars per year. The information was revealed by FCA boss Sergio Marchionne during an interview with Reuters.

    Confirmed to share a platform with the Jeep Grand Cherokee originally, Maserati boss Harald Wester recently said that this was no longer the case. Instead, it’s likely Maserati will use a modified version of the platform underpinning its Ghibli and Quattroporte sedans. This way, Maserati will be able to employ its own Q4 all-wheel-drive system which is already offered in both the Ghibli and Quattroporte.

    As for engines, expect the same turbocharged V-6 and V-8 gasoline units found in the Ghibli and Quattroporte to make their way into the Levante. The most powerful model should match the 523-horsepower rating of the most powerful Quattroporte. Overseas, expect a diesel too.

    During the same Reuters interview, Marchionne said that production of the Alfieri sports car concept could take place within the next 24 to 28 months, should the project receive the green light. He explained that the relatively quick destination was due to FCA already having an available platform and engines.

    Though the Alfieri concept was built on a shortened version of the current Maserati GranTurismo’s platform and shared that car’s V-8, a production version is expected to ride a shortened version of the platform developed for Maserati’s Ghibli and Quattroporte sedans.     Koenigsegg One:1 Supercar Comes With Cloud Connectivity And Custom App

    Some specific services, which are destined to be offered with future Koenigsegg models in addition to the new One:1, enables owners to get direct access to statistics such as recent runs, average speed, top speed, lap time, g force etc. They can also adjust the height of the rear wing, the firmness of the suspension, adjust the temperature, and even open the doors and windows.

    Honda Civic Si built from Forza Motorsport gamer's design, 2014 Chicago Auto Show

    The crossover between video games and real life has become something we in the car world know and respect--most notably through Gran Turismo and the Nissan GT Academy. Now, it's Forza Motorsport and Honda that are helping bridge the digital divide with a custom Civic Si designed by one lucky gamer.

    Honda is building the car for display at the Chicago Auto Show. Chosen from 170 entries, the winning design comes from Forza gamer Tiffany Labedz. Labedz's design was chosen by the Forza Motorsport community's 17,000 gamers.

    "At Honda, we love meeting our customers where their passion lies, and the  racing and custom car design in Forza Motorsport is definitely a passion for so many Honda and Civic enthusiasts," said Tom Peyton, assistant vice president of advertising for American Honda.     Ford nips at Toyota in U.S. retail sales race

    DETROIT (Bloomberg) -- The Ford brand is closing in on Toyota as the favorite of retail auto buyers in the United States, a sign of rising popularity of the Fusion mid-sized car and Escape SUV, and of growing dismay with the Japanese manufacturer.

    Toyota Motor Corp.'s namesake brand, a default choice of a generation of car buyers who admired its high quality, lost ground during the past six years amid recalls, natural disasters and stiffer competition.

    Its share of the U.S. retail market fell to 13.5 percent last year from 16.3 percent in 2008, according to data provided to Bloomberg by IHS Automotive using Polk vehicle-registration records.

    Toyota's 2.8 percentage point loss matched the gain of Ford Motor Co.'s main brand, to a 13.2 percent share, over the same period.

    Retail registrations are the best measure of the tastes of individual car buyers because they exclude bulk fleet sales to corporate and government customers.

    Toyota dominated the retail market before the recession, with top sellers such as the Camry sedan and Corolla compact.

    Those models now face tougher competition as car shoppers favor Ford models including the Fusion, which draws frequent comparisons to an Aston Martin, and a restyled, fuel-efficient Escape.

    Hyundai Motor Co. and Subaru, the auto unit of Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., also gaining ground.

    "Before 2010, Toyota's image was bulletproof, and while it is still strong, it's not rock solid and as perfect as it was before," said Tom Libby, auto analyst for IHS Automotive. "It now appears their march forward has been slowed."

    Top three

    The leader in total U.S. sales is General Motor and its four brands, including Chevrolet and Cadillac.

    Ford, including its fleet sales and Lincoln brand, is No. 2, followed by Toyota, which overtook Ford in sales ranked by company from 2007 to 2009 before falling back to the third position.

    Those rankings will hold again when February's U.S. sales results are announced on Monday, according to analysts surveyed by Bloomberg.

    Toyota, GM and Ford may all report declines, while Chrysler Group and Nissan Motor Co. are expected to post gains, according to analysts surveyed.

    Light-vehicle sales in the United States may rise 0.4 percent in February to almost 1.2 million, the average of six analyst estimates. The annualized rate, adjusted for seasonal trends, will probably remain at 15.3 million, the average of 10 analyst estimates, the same as in February 2013.

    Toyota's once-pristine image was tarnished, Libby said, when it recalled more than 10 million vehicles for problems related to unintended acceleration in 2009 and 2010, involving defective floor mats and accelerator pedals.

    The world's largest automaker lost sales in 2011 after an earthquake and tsunami rocked Japan and shut down Toyota's car factories.

    Rebound scenario

    Toyota's U.S. retail market share fell to 12.4 percent in 2011, recovered to 13.7 percent in 2012 and declined again last year, the IHS data show.

    "A fair number of people -- I was among them -- thought that after the recall situation and after the tsunami that Toyota would just resume where they were," Libby said. "Lo and behold, they have not."

    As total U.S. auto sales rose, Toyota has increased sales by more than a half-million vehicles in the last two years.

    That is more important than its retail market share, said Mike Michels, a Toyota spokesman.

    "Share doesn't pay the bills, sales do -- that was and is our focus," Michels said. "Toyota recovered an enormous amount of volume after the recession and Tsunami/Thailand floods impacted periods."

    Design changes

    Toyota will probably maintain its slight retail lead over Ford this year thanks to redesigns of the Corolla, RAV4 small SUV and Highlander SUV, said Jeff Schuster, an analyst with researcher LMC Automotive in Troy, Mich.

    The Camry, Toyota's top seller, will also receive minor design changes late this year, he said.

    "Ford's going to give them a run for their money over the next couple years, but at this point we don't see them overtaking Toyota," Schuster said.

    Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda has pushed his designers to create more exciting cars after critics have dismissed the company's products as "blandmobiles."

    At the Detroit auto show in January, Toyota generated buzz and floor traffic with its red FT-1 concept that drew inspiration from the automaker's Supra sports car.

    "We've seen some indication that Toyota is going to refocus on design and basically bring sexy back or maybe get it for the first time," Schuster said.

    Swoopy Sonata

    The styling of Hyundai's swoopy Sonata sedan, Kia's angular Optima sedan and Ford's Fusion have attracted family-car buyers, Schuster said.

    Korea's Hyundai and its corporate sibling Kia combined to control 8.2 percent of the U.S. retail market last year, up from 5 percent in 2008, though down from 2012, according to the IHS data.

    "Vehicles like the Fusion, Escape and our hybrids have provided us with a tremendous amount of retail sales and share gain, particularly in the coastal regions in the west and southeast, areas that typically have been dominated by Japanese automakers," said Erich Merkle, Ford's sales analyst.

    The Ford brand's overall retail sales rose 14 percent in 2013, he said, powered by a 21 percent rise in the West and a 17 percent increase in the Southeast.

    The closing quality gap among automakers has removed a onetime Toyota advantage, Libby said.

    The Toyota brand ranked seventh in J.D. Power & Associates' Initial Quality Study last year, below GM's GMC truck brand, which ranked second, and its Chevrolet line, which ranked fifth.

    "In core car segments, where Toyota really had their strength and still has strength, there's more legitimate competition," Libby said.

    Chevrolet's slide

    Despite quality gains and praise from critics, GM's Chevrolet brand also lost ground among individual retail buyers. Chevy's U.S. retail share fell to 10.7 percent last year, from 11.4 percent in 2008.

    GM last year introduced a redesigned Silverado pickup truck, its top seller, as well as updating the design of its Malibu family car.

    "Chevrolet is pretty disappointing. They've had a significant product revival over the last two years and they've not been able to gain share," Libby said.

    Since 2008, Chevrolet has exited the minivan and small pickup categories, which cost it retail sales, said Jim Cain, a company spokesman.

    GM will begin offering a smaller pickup later this year with the Colorado model. The company also is putting a greater emphasis on profits, selling fewer cars on deep discount, he said.

    Light years

    "The quality of our market share is light years ahead of where it was in 2008," Cain said. "We are much more profitable and the resale of our products has risen sharply thanks to what is now an essentially all-new showroom of vehicles."

    Chrysler saw its Jeep line of SUVs climb to 3.4 percent from 2.7 percent in 2008, the IHS data show.

    The next top brands will find a way to lead in innovation, as Toyota did in the last two decades with the Prius hybrid- electric car and the RAV4 that helped pioneer the car-like SUV category, Libby said.

    Segment leaders

    Honda Motor Co., which was second to Toyota in retail share in 2008, has slipped to fourth. It had 10.4 percent of the retail market last year, down from 11.9 percent in 2008, according to the IHS data.

    Honda also has suffered from lackluster looks, Libby said, as the competition has become more appealing. Like Toyota, it also had to contend with natural disasters in Asia that disrupted production in 2011.

    While its retail share slid, Honda said its top-selling models were retail leaders in their segments: the Civic compact, Accord mid-size car, CR-V compact utility and Odyssey minivan.

    The company doesn't have a fleet-sales operation and few Honda dealers handle such sales.

    "Our focus on retail sales to individual buyers has a direct correlation to the high resale value of Honda products, which is a key factor in the value proposition for our customers," John Mendel, executive vice president of automobile sales for Honda's U.S. unit, said in a statement last week.-autonews.com

    Car Watch: Volkswagen Golf is the World Car of 2013

    KATHMANDU: The newly unveiled Volkswagen Golf has bagged the 2013 edition of World Car of the Year award. This seventh generation Volkswagen won the prestigious award for its German car maker for the second time in a row. In 2012 the Volkswagen Up! had won the same title.

    And way before that also, Volkswagen Polo in 2010, and the Volkswagen Golf VI had bagged the same price in 2009. So, to sum up, Volkswagen has won this particular award for four times.

    Runners-up for the big award included the Audi A3, Land Rover Range Rover, Mazda6, Mazda CX-5, Mercedes-Benz A-Class, Peugeot 208, Porsche Boxster/Cayman, Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ/Toyota GT86 and Volvo V40.

    Along with that, Porsche Boxster and Cayman were picked up for the 2013 World Performance Car award after a fierce competition with Aston Martin Vanquish, Audi RS5, BMW M6, BMW M135i, Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG, Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster, Renault Clio Sport and the Toyobaru triplets.

    And guess, who won the award for environment friendly car? The World Green Car award was handed to the all-electric Tesla Model S by brushing aside the claims of Renault Zoe, Smart ForTwo Electric Drive, Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid and Volvo V60 Plug-In Hybrid Diesel.

    The World Car awards are handed out by a panelist of 66 auto journalists from around the world and the award were announced amid a press conference jointly organized by New York International Auto Show and Bridgestone Corporations.

    The newly unveiled Volkswagen Golf has bagged the 2013 edition of World Car of the Year 2013 award.

    As responded throughout the world, in Nepal also the car has been popular due to its shape, structure and mileage kept promises since 2010.

    “We have been offering Golf in Nepal since 2010 as it is the third highest selling model in the world, which gained in popularity on a global scale through five generations,” Sarik Bogati, Marketing and Brand Manager of Pooja International Nepal, authorized importer and distributor of Volkswagen passenger cars in Nepal said.

    Leonardo DiCaprio's new flick, The Wolf of Wall Street, has been nominated for five Oscars. If you've not seen the film, it is a wild, hedonistic and down-right scandalous take on real-life human Jordan Belfort's fraudulent early life as a crooked stockbroker on Wall Street.

    It's really rather good, though we can't tell you too much about it because (a) we don't want to issue spoilers and (b) most of it is rather X-rated.

    What we can tell you, however, it that because TWOWS is a period film, the producers got to play with the period vehicles of the 1980s and 1990s. And, as any car aficionado will attest, this era provided the world with supercars that adorned the bedroom walls of many a teenager.
